Original Inhabitants

The Bunerong and the Wawoorung clans of the Kulin Nation were the original inhabitants of the area now known as Hobsons Bay.  The lands of the Kulin people occupied about two hundred kilometres of the local area including the greater Melbourne area.  White settlement of the area resulted in a loss of access to traditional lands and many people died or were moved away.  Today descendants of the area still live in the area. Hobsons Bay City Council acknowledges the people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional custodians of this area.
